Making a self-care checklist is a great way to help you cope through stressful periods. When one is stressed, we often forget the things we could or should be doing to help lower stress levels. 

By making a checklist of things that help you calm and soothe, you’ll have a cheat sheet of sorts to pull out for when your brain doesn’t quite know where to turn. 

Compile your list of things that you enjoy, of things that make you feel good about yourself and your life, and something that helps you relax. 

Be sure to include daily important functions like showering and eating, which will help give you a boost.

For those who are more creative than others, turning to art is a great way to handle stress management. 

Art is a beautiful way to take your mind off of what bothers you. It gives a positive distraction and helps form healthy pathways, which helps lower stress, depression, and anxiety. 

Find an artistic medium you enjoy and spend some time with it. The benefits are innumerable. 

2 – Exercise

For those who enjoy being active, exercise is a great self-care practice that boosts endorphins and lowers stress levels. 

Even for those who aren’t very exercise-oriented, a quick 20-minute walk per day has been proven to lower anxiety, increase the immune system, and lower depression, among other benefits. 

If you’re feeling a bit stressed or down in a slump, head outside for a few minutes, as much as you could do, and you’ll see a definite change in clarity and calmness as a result.

If you have the time, cooking is an excellent form of therapy. Find a recipe that you’ve never done before and spent some time making it happen. 

You’ll be distracted, you’ll be nourished, and you’ll have a sense of accomplishment from cooking something nice that day. Many people use cooking as a way to help lower depression and anxiety.

Sometimes writing is an excellent form of expression. Whether you write out your troubles or just enjoy writing creatively, it’s a great way to lower stress and anxiety. 

Many people use writing in all its forms to express things that they otherwise feel they can’t say. This is an excellent release for many, making writing one of the best stress relief tools for nearly anyone.

Depending on how your stress is presenting itself or where it’s coming from, getting involved in something bigger than your current situation may be a great way to ease stress. 

Of course, if your stress comes from having too much on your plate, this may not be the best choice. 

However, for many, volunteering once or twice a week for a cause they believe in helps them look at a bigger picture, gives them endorphins, boosts self-esteem and serotonin, and more. 

All of these things team up to help reduce stress. For many, helping others makes their issues seem less significant suddenly, causing stress relief.

You don’t have to be good at dancing to enjoy dancing. Dancing is a great way to release some stress and have some fun. 

Whether you dance alone, or with a partner, at home or in a club, dancing boosts happy hormones and chemicals, giving you a stress relief boost.

There are many soothing properties for bathing. Taking a bath is a great way to relax and reduce stress. 

From the warm water to the safeness of the bathroom alone time, a bath is the perfect stress reduction tool. 

This is only increased by adding extras, like bubble bath, bath bombs, candles, and an excellent book. 

Taking some time for yourself and your thoughts in a bath is a great way to lower stress, anxiety, and depression. 

8 – Aromatherapy 

Another practical method of lowering stress is the use of aromatherapy. Smelling certain scents has different effects on the brain and our moods and emotions. 

Lavender is a great stress-relieving scent, as well as eucalyptus. Of course, if you don’t like these scents, you can find one that makes you calm and happy. 

Using scent as a way to trigger your system into soothing is familiar, comfortable and even preferred by many.

9 – Time Out ~ Stress Management

For those looking to manage stress throughout their day without having too much time, giving yourself a time out is a great way to do it. Most people can find short five to ten minute periods throughout the day. 

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, give yourself a time out. Remove yourself from your environment and focus on something you enjoy for a few minutes. 

For instance, this may be going to the bathroom with a magazine for a few minutes, or it may look like sitting quietly with your favorite songs on for a few minutes. 

Whatever little thing you enjoy could be done. Use these few minutes to reconnect with yourself and readjust your surroundings. Giving yourself a few minutes to breathe a few times a day will help you keep going when you need to.

There are many great ways to manage stress, and how one goes about doing so entirely depends on their preferences and personality. 

Consider things that you enjoy, and consider things that seem to calm you and work them into your day. 

Everyone gets overwhelmed and stressed sometimes, and we all need our ways to cope with this stress. 

Find what works for you and incorporate it where you can. By doing so, you’ll be giving your brain the appropriate pathways and functions it needs to manage high levels of stress, making your days more comfortable.
